Women farm January 8th 2014, posted in Current affairs, Women - holding up half the sky

FarmHer is a documentary photography project capturing the reality and beauty of women in farming, traditionally a male-dominated field (literally).  Created by Marji Guyler-Alaniz, a photographer from Iowa, the project’s goal is to change the image of farming by acknowledging the important role of women.  “Too often in our world, the beauty of a woman; of an image, is judged by a face. These are beautiful women, doing beautiful work and my goal is to bring an appreciation to what they do.”

Census data reveal that the numbers of women in agriculture, particularly in the role of principal operator, are increasing.  As land increasingly becomes handed down to children of either gender, women are beginning to take on more visible and involved roles.
