A recent, very poignant, article in The Observer reminded me of the importance of inclusivity in our wider communities (which often means anyone beyond our tiny islands of immediate family). All too often, as is anecdotally reported, women over 40 are feeling increasingly isolated and invisible. And if they have children and or are single, deletion from society seems to accelerate.
Excellent article in Ms covering exactly what I was referring to in my earlier post here – a complete lack of media coverage of women’s sports. As the writer says, “Fan interest operates as a self-feeding loop: TV and newspaper coverage may reflect fan interest, while fan interest grows with more TV and newspaper coverage. Which is the chicken and which the egg?”
Drama within the UK Premier League…
Good news! Woman official (lineswoman) at recent (January 2011) Premier League football game.
Bad news! Male commentators caught on tape making chauvinistic, patronising comments.
The catalyst for this blog was when I finished reading the sports section of The Guardian on 6 May 2009 and realized when I finished that I hadn’t read about any women.
